How to stay productive at work during the heat!

There is currently a heatwave in the UK and concentration and focus levels have definitely gone down especially at work!

With temperatures in the high 20s and mid-30s, it can put a strain on your body’s ability to recover and remain productive, too. That can have a negative impact in the workplace. So how do you make sure you’re giving yourself the best chance to combat the heat and be at your best as the sun continues to shine?

  • Hydration! - Water is key! Drinking water replenishes the fluids lost when sweating and you leave yourself open to the dangers of dehydration if you don’t get enough. These can include dizziness, headaches and feeling confused and disorientated.

  • After a long day at work and a hot commute back home in the sun, a good nights rest is so important in order to maintain your physical and mental strength and, therefore, your ability to perform the next day. Unfortunately, the heat can often lead to a restless night, so overnight recovery is even more important.

  • The hot weather does mean the traditional excuses of ‘bad weather’ can’t be used to put off doing outdoor exercise or activities during your free time. But physical exercise has been proven to boost well being and have a positive impact on your mood and even work productivity.

  • Plan your day productively - t's easy to get distracted when the weather is nice. Your productivity can decrease as your mind starts to wander with a sense of longing to be outdoors enjoying the sunshine.

  • One of the upsides of working from home means you don’t have to dress up for the office.

This is a joy when the temperatures rise as you can ditch your heavy work wear and throw on light loose clothing to keep you cool.

  • Finding a suitable place to work at home can be challenging especially if your kids are at home for the school holidays.

If your desk is in a sunny spot try to move it to a shadier spot during heatwaves.

  • Try to switch off any electrical appliances not in use, such as your TV or laptop charger, as these can generate a small amount of heat which can build up, and avoid working with your laptop on your knees as this can quickly build up heat on your legs.
